Stuart family in Newmill - Originally from Tarland

A flat stone at Tarland kirkyard located in front of his son's stone states:

PETER STUART farmer in Newmill, Birse was interred here in 1810 in his 84th year of a highly useful religious and respected life.  MARY HUNTER his wife in 1818.  Also their children WILLIAM, MARY, MARGARET, ANN, HELEN and MICHAL (sic).

The first appearance of the above family in Birse (from the Lists of Inhabitants 1780 - 1825) is in 1790 when Michael Stuart appears with the family of John Davie at Newmill.  By the 1792 list, his father and mother have followed, the listing is given as such:

Peter STUART (6) married

Mary HUNTER (6) married

Michael STUART (3)

John STUART (3)

Alexr REID (2)

Mary SIMMER (4)

(Ages on this list are in decades, Peter in his 6th decade therefore born between 1732 - 1742.  According the above monumental inscription this is slightly out, his date of birth would be circa 1726. The last two names in the family group may be servants.)

Issue of Peter and Mary recorded in Tarland and Migvie Parish Registers:

By the 1797 - 1798 Listing the family group at Newmill is as follows:

There is a Margaret Stuart aged 45 farm servant residing with Shaw Cattanach aged 90 at Auchabrack in the Forest of Birse.  This may be the same Margaret listed above with Peter Stuart and Mary Hunter.  Note that on the baptism entry for Helen below, Shaw Catanach is given as one of the witnesses.
